The Law of Believing

By Peg Yarbrough

“You are where you are today by your believing,
and you will be tomorrow where your believing takes you.” V. P. Wierwille
Life may be full of challenges, but our God is full of solutions.
There is a heart wrenching record in Mark 9:14-27 where a father had a tremendous need; his son was possessed with a demon that tore him up, caused him to foam at the mouth, and the boy was wasting away.  What a helpless and terrifying way to live.
When Jesus came on the scene this poor father pled, “ofttimes it [the demon] hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.”  Jesus was certainly moved with compassion, and wanted to heal the boy, but he also understood the law of believing, and so he said to the father:
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible[presently available]to him that believeth.  Mark 9:23
That “if” the father had cast in Jesus’ teeth was a little word with huge consequences.  Jesus put the “if” where it belonged, back on the father.  The father was desperate for his son to be delivered, the need was certainly there, but he also wanted Jesus and his disciples to do his believing for him.  Jesus knew that would never work.  He understood that for this father to receive anything from God, the father had to believe.  Believing is one of those things that no one can do FOR you, not God, not Jesus, not other people, but “It’s me, O Lord.”  And Jesus understood the law of believing.
But that wonderful father did the smartest thing he could have done, he asked Jesus for help!
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.  Mark 9:24
The father cried out with tears, “Lord, I am believing the best I know how right now, teach me how to believe rightly.”  And Jesus must have taught him, right then and there, because in short order Jesus rebuked the demon and the boy was healed.
The law of believing is the greatest law in the universe.  To believe is a verb; it  connotes action, it means to trust whole heartedly, which is an act of the will and heart of man.The abundant life is available right now for those who understand and apply the law of believing.  Jesus said to the father in Mark 9, “all things are possible” or presently available, to him who believes.  Wow!
Believing is a law.  Like the law of gravity, the law of believing works for saint and sinner alike, however it was given for the believer, because God knew that with the spirit of Christ within, His children would have “supercharged” believing, and be able to walk in signs, miracles and wonders!
The law of gravity is neutral; if one jumps off a cliff, they will fall, and perhaps die.  But that same law blesses people everyday; houses remain in one spot, cars do not go floating off the freeway, things stay put.  That is a blessing.  The law of gravity is neutral; it brings chaos or order depending upon how one applies it.
The law of believing is neutral.  It will produce whatever you feed it, therefore you are ultimately in control.  There are two types of believing: positive and negative.  Positive, or right believing is an inner knowing that God is in you and with you in every situation.  Fear, doubt, worry and anxiety (which are negative believing) take a back seat to the trust and confidence that you have decided to place in God and His Son, Jesus Christ.  You will to believe God above the circumstances, because you have decided to trust Him and His word.
For he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.   Heb. 13:5
Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.    Mat. 28:20
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.   I John 4:4
How you think about a problem you are facing will absolutely determine the outcome.  If you doubt God’s presence and power, if you think that you will not succeed, then your failure is assured.  But if you trust in the Lord, and lean on Him, you will reap the rewards of the law of believing – success, deliverance, victory, love, joy, peace.
All of life revolves around believing.  We are born again because we confess with our mouth and BELIEVE in our heart. Rom. 10:9.  We have access to the new birth, to healing, to blessings, to peace and to prosperity the exact same way, by believing.
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him.  Col. 2:6. We receive every promise from God just like we received salvation, first we believe, then we receive.  It’s the law of believing.
And with the exception of young children (as in Mark 9), the dead, and the mentally impaired, Jesus always required believing on the part of the the individual who had the need.
The world says, “First you see, then you believe.”  God says, “First you believe then you see [receive].”
Believing is a law, and the whole point is that men would believe positively, in harmony with God’s word in order to live the more abundant life. The law of believing works with a mathematical exactness and a scientific precision, just like laws of science or physics.  What you believe is what you will receive.
The following verses encapsulate some of the aspects of positive, or right, believing.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, ThisIStheway, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
No matter where you go in life, go in harmony with God’s word.  Listen to Him and follow His lead because THIS IS THE WAY of life.
But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded youTHAT it may be well unto you.  Jer. 7:23
When you believe God and obey His laws of life, then it will be well with you.  Did you know that God wants to bless you even more than you want to be blessed?  That’s why the Father clearly teaches you how to receive things from Him .  Now it is up to you to believe to receive them.
We need to keep the words of God running through our mind throughout the day.  Trust, faith and confidence in Him, issue in positive believing.  We need to deal with life through the “filter” of God’s words.  When problems arise our first thought should be, “How does God’s word say to deal with this?”  or go directly to Him and ask, “Father, what do I need to do?”
Fear, doubt, worry, anxiety, are all types of negative believing.  And negative  believing, defeats the promises of God.  How can you hear from God when you are all stressed out, all tied up in knots?  Believing rightly is trusting that God is with you, and in you; right there, helping you handle the situation.  You are never left alone to face life, He is always with you, in good times and in bad.
For example, the world teaches mothers that if they don’t constantly worry about their children they are not a good mother; while the word of God says to  “fear not.”  Job got a major dose of this with his own family.  Job was a worry wart.  He worried constantly, and one day, all that fear and worry came crashing down on him.  He lost everything: his children, his health, his wealth, he lost it all, except his complaining wife.  These are Job’s words from which we can learn:
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.   Job 3:25
Job greatlyfeared!  This was not a little nagging thought, it was an obsession.  Job. 1:5.  He dwelt in this fear day in and day out, and finally it manifested.  First he believed (wrongly) and then he received — it’s a law.
Moms should be attentive and concerned enough to raise their children in love, safety, and the nurture of the Lord; but to build the habit of worry defeats the promises of God.  Instead of worrying, learn to go to God for wisdom and guidance in raising your children.   And learn to trust God to love and protect them.  This goes for you fathers, too.
There is no reason why a son of God should be just as negative, just as sick, just as miserable and full of fear as the UNbeliever, or the UNsaved.  Christ came to give us a new life, a better life, and abundant life.  And we manifest that new life when we trust in the Lord with all our heart, and are led by His spirit.
You will manifest the abundant life in every area where you get your believing lined up with what God says: about Himself, about His son, about YOU, about life, about the future — about everything.  But reading the Bible, or going to fellowship, doesn’t make you a believer any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.  BELIEVING the Bible makes you a believer!
The apostle Paul upbraided the first century Christians for remaining carnal (worldly) after they knew the liberating truth of God’s word.
For ye are yetcarnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?   I Cor. 3:3
Paul reproved them for walking as carnal men rather than as sons of God, who were led by the spirit.  He was well aware that their carnality would rob them of the precious promises of God, and they would continue to be racked and ruined by the devil.  John 10:10. They needed to change their believing.
Because the carnal mind is enmity [hostile] against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.   Rom. 8:7
The carnal mind is hostile towards God. Hostile is a very strong word!  It denotes wrong believing.  Carnal thinking brings negative results.  Being spiritually minded brings life and peace.
Solomon was once the wisest man in all the earth, and the Lord gave him these words to pen for future generations:
My son, forget not my law; but let thine heartkeep my commandments:
For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.  Prov. 3:1-6
That’s the ticket!  To look, learn, and listen to God.  Let His words sink deep into your heart.  Believe Him.  Trust in Him above your own mental surmisings.  Then (time) you can you follow His direction and enjoy lifepeacefavor, and good understanding with God and man.  That’s abundant.
The law of believing applies to everyone, as surely as the law of gravity.
So here’s the rub, whom, and what, are you going to believe?  The hurts of your past, the slick politicians, the evening news, the unsound words of some “friend”?  Or, are you going to believe the words of life from the Lord God Almighty, Who loves you and gave His son for you?
Once you know what God says about a subject, you are faced with a life altering choice; whether to BELIEVE God and walk according to His ways, or to keep walking in the sparks of your own stupidity, and stay miserable.
In Romans 12, we are strongly warned to NOT be conformed to this world, but to be transformed by putting on new thoughts, godly thoughts, a whole new way of thinking about life based solely on God’s word.  And to form a new picture of ourselves, and of our life, based on who we are in Christ Jesus.
“How have you mentally pictured yourself for the past week, month, year, ten years?  The picture that you carry of yourself with clearness and concern is what you are.  This law works for positive and negative thinking alike.”  V. P. Wierwille.
When you picture yourself as God sees you; filled with His spirit, bold as a lion, trusting the Lord to guide you like a shepherd, you will manifest those things. But if you carry a vision inside of your “old man,” the one who was kicked around by Satan, full of fear, nervousness, and anxiety, you will continue to manifest that in your life – it’s a law.
Change the outside by changing the inside; by changing what you believe about yourself down deep in your heart.  Grab hold of the truths of God concerning yourself, your family and your life; and don’t let anything steal that from your heart.  It’s the Word, the Word, and nothing but the Word.  Eat it, drink it, and sleep it.  Is that a radical way to live?  Yes!  But that kind of commitment is what will truly transform your life.  And the rewards are well worth the effort.
When the law of believing finally gels in your heart, and the light goes on, “Oh, this is how believing works,” you will shout, “Glory Hallelujah!”  It will electrify you that God has given you such an awesome tool!
All that I have said in this lengthy treatise can really be summed up on in four words that Jesus uttered, “HavefaithinGod.”  Mark 11:22.
Life may be full of challenges, but our God is full of solutions.  The law of believing can either work for you or against you; it all depends on how you apply it.  I encourage you apply it positively and see the godly results.
You are where you are today by your believing, and you will be tomorrow where your believing takes you.  Where do you want to go with God?  The sky’s the limit.
… If thou canst believe, all things are possible[presently available] to him that believeth.  Mark 9:23
Walking in Faith,
Peg
