The Spoken Word

By Peg Yarbrough

“For He spake and it was done; He commanded and it stood fast.”  Psa. 33:9
There is tremendous power in the spoken Word.  It is great to think the Word, but you also need to speak it.  Speak the Word out loud to the problem, or situation.
One day while walking to Jerusalem, Jesus spoke to a fig tree. That’s right, Jesus actually talked to a tree!  And the disciples “heard it.”  Like, “what on earth is Jesus doing?”  I’ll tell you what he was doing; he was imitating His Father.
Here is the pattern:
For he [God] spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.   Psalm 33:9
In Genesis chapter one God spoke things into being eight times.  All the molecules that bonded to form the UNIVERSE lined up at God’s command, at His spoken word.  He spoke, and it was done!  That is an amazing truth.  God spoke the heavens and earth into being by the power of His word.  And when we speak His word, mixed with believing, it carries that same creative and regenerative power today.
Jesus was teaching his disciples (including us) a lesson with the fig tree, we need to speak God’s word to the problem, not just to think about it.
Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.  Mat. 21:21
Jesus said we could speak to the mountain, which was a figure of speech representing an insurmountable problem, and if we do not doubt, it will be cast into the sea.  In other words, the problem would be resolved by speaking truth to it.  That is powerful.
In the gospels Jesus commanded (spoke) to demons and they came out, he spoke to the blind man’s eyes, and the man received his sight.  When Jairus little daughter was dead he spoke life into that child.
And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.   And straightway the damsel arose.  Mark 5:41,42

I know some people might say, “Well, I would feel foolish speaking like that.”  Don’t you think that’s exactly how the devil wants you to feel?  As a child of the most High God if you ever find out how much power you really have, it will be a whole new ball game!  Right this minute Satan is terrified that you are going to “learn the rules” of spiritual warfare because then you will be able to thwart his evil at every turn, just like Jesus did!
It is the spirit that quickeneth [makes alive]; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.  John 6:63
Life and death ARE in the power of the tongue.  Prov. 18:21.  We need to be speaking a lot more words of life, to ourselves and to our situations.  Do you run words of life through your mind all through the day or words of death?  What words do you meditate and think on?
There is life in the Word of God.  And His word is no less powerful in your mouth than it was in the mouth of Jesus – when mixed with believing.  Whereas my own words, from my five senses, carry no supernatural power.  But GOD’s WORD is totally different – it is spirit and it is LIFE!
When and where we get our believing confession lined up with words from God, it shall come to pass — it’s one of God’s immutable laws.
And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.  Matt. 21:22
And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:   I John 5:14
God wants us to have this confidence, not hesitancy, but the holy boldness, to  speak forth His words with all believing authority.  That power is in us, and available to us, today, right now.
But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, THAT thou mayest do it.   Deut. 30:14
That’s the key.  When we believe the word that is in our mouth and in our heart – it shall come to pass.  God’s word always produces results because God is always present to back it up.  He is our very present help in times of trouble.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.   Psa. 46:1
My friends, your Father has loaded you up with “Christ in you, the hope of glory,” all nine manifestations of the spirit, His wisdom, His love, His power, and the Bible “that ye may know” His word and His will, but it is up to YOU to speak it forth in faith.
And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
Acts 4:31,33
That’s the power of the spoken word.  Amen.
In His Love,
Peg
